Reporting on Canon's production and business situation in 2023, General Director Shigeyuki Okamoto said that last year, in the context of the country's general difficulties, Canon Vietnam's production output decreased, but the number of approximately 18,000 employees is still guaranteed employment and benefited as always. In the next year, Canon continues to need to recruit more workers to increase output and revenue.
In the context that Vietnam will increase the regional minimum wage from July 1, 2024, Canon will increase salaries for staff and employees, and implement Tet bonuses for employees according to the proposed plan.
At the meeting, Mr. Shigeyuki Okamoto proposed to the Minister several issues related to licensing procedures for guest workers in Vietnam; global minimum tax incentives, policies to create conditions for foreign businesses to invest in Vietnam, and the issue of amending the Law on Employment.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister Dao Ngoc Dung said that Vietnam and Japan have a special close relationship. According to the Minister, currently, the number of Vietnamese people living and working in Japan ranks first among 15 countries, nearly 520 thousand people, of which, Vietnamese workers working in Japan are about 350 thousand people. In 2023, 85,000 Vietnamese workers are working in Japan. With that special relationship, Vietnam greatly appreciates and creates favorable conditions for Japanese businesses investing and operating in Vietnam.
The Minister highly appreciated the results achieved by Canon Vietnam in the past year. Especially overcoming difficulties and challenges to maintain stable production and business activities, create jobs, and take care of workers. “Canon has done two things well. To focus on reputation and develop the brand of the business. And to take care of and retain workers, especially female workers" the Minister emphasized. This achievement shows loyalty and attachment between businesses and employees. The Minister sympathized with the difficulties of Japanese businesses during the two years affected by the Covid 19 pandemic and affirmed that Vietnam always creates a sustainable business environment, listens, and creates conditions for foreign businesses operating in Vietnam.
Regarding the procedures of licensing for foreigners working in Vietnam, Minister Dao Ngoc Dung said, Decree 70/2023/ND-CP dated September 18, 2023, of the Government of Vietnam (amending and supplementing several Articles of Decree No. 152/2020/ND-CP dated December 30, 2020, of the Government regulating guest workers working in Vietnam and recruitment, management of Vietnamese workers working for foreign organizations and individuals in Vietnam) was issued after asking for comments from many businesses, in the spirit of openness and transparency for foreign businesses investing and operating in Vietnam. Decree No.70 has minimized administrative procedures, providing one-stop regulations on the authority to issue documents approving the employment of foreign workers... The Minister emphasized that if Canon Vietnam has any difficulties in implementing the licensing procedures, the Minister will directly respond and resolve them.
Regarding recommendations related to global minimum tax, the Minister said that this is a global regulation and cannot be changed. Therefore, to create favorable conditions for foreign businesses, in the coming time, Vietnam will issue supportive policies.
Regarding the amendment of the Law on Employment, the Minister informed that the draft of the Law on Employment (amended) has been in the preparation stage, expected to be submitted to the National Assembly in October 2024. Therefore, if Japanese businesses and Canon have recommendations or suggestions related to amending the law, all recommendations and suggestions can be sent to the Ministry for research, receipt, and completion of the draft.
On the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2024, the Minister wished Canon success and further development. He also affirmed that he would support and create the best conditions for Canon to do business and further develop in Vietnam.
