HANOI COLLEGE OF MEDICINE: TRAINING HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS with a strong commitment to community responsibility

Healthcare education requires an integrated approach that combines professional knowledge, practical skills and a strong sense of professional responsibility. In addition to technical competence, those working in the healthcare sector must demonstrate diligence, dedication and respect for patients. With a practice-oriented approach and a learner-centred philosophy, Hanoi College of Medicine focuses on equipping students with essential knowledge, developing their practical skills and fostering professional ethics, with the aim of meeting the evolving demands of the healthcare sector.

From Its Establishment to a Journey of Development

Hanoi College of Medicine was established on September 11, 2009, originally operating under the name Hanoi Technical and Nursing Intermediate School and under the management of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training. On September 24, 2012, the Hanoi People's Committee approved its renaming as Hanoi Medical Intermediate School. Subsequently, on August 1, 2019, the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs issued Decision No. 998/QĐ-LĐTBXH, establishing Hanoi College of Medicine I through the upgrading of Hanoi Medical Intermediate School. On July 12, 2021, under Decision No. 800/QĐ-LĐTBXH, the institution was officially renamed Hanoi College of Medicine.

Looking back on its journey of establishment and development, Hanoi College of Medicine has achieved encouraging results in education and training. Its graduation rate has consistently reached between 99% and 100%, with 70–75% of graduates achieving good or excellent academic results. More than 70% of graduates have secured employment at healthcare facilities across the country, while over 12% have pursued employment opportunities overseas. A number of former students have gone on to work at major medical institutions, including Bach Mai Hospital, Viet Duc University Hospital, K Hospital and Military Central Hospital 108, while continuing to pursue further education and enhance their professional qualifications.

In teaching and learning, the College has recorded three educational initiatives, while eight students have received city-level awards. Meanwhile, 80% of its lecturers have achieved the College's excellent teaching qualification. Professional development and academic excellence are further promoted through competitions for outstanding lecturers and students, as well as activities designed to strengthen practical skills. The College has also received a Certificate of Merit from the Hanoi People's Committee in recognition of its outstanding collective performance. Its students have been honoured with the Tran Van On Award, presented by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, and the Golden Certificate of Recognition for Contributions to the Development of Vietnamese Culture and Education, presented by the Chu Van An Award Organising Committee.

Alongside its educational responsibilities, the College has paid considerable attention to investment in facilities, faculty development and improvements in institutional management. Community engagement activities, including volunteering, voluntary blood donation and initiatives honouring those who have made contributions to the nation, have also been maintained, reflecting the close connection between education and social responsibility.

Integrating Professional Knowledge with Practical Skills

Hanoi College of Medicine embraces the educational philosophy of "Genuine Learning – Practical Training – Authentic Recognition – Effective Career Preparation", placing learners at the centre of the educational process. This approach reflects the College's commitment to substantive learning and to strengthening the connection between academic knowledge and the ability to perform professional duties upon graduation.

The development of a qualified teaching workforce is another key priority. Approximately 70% of the College's lecturers hold Specialist Level I or Specialist Level II medical qualifications. Its teaching staff also includes lecturers and experts from the Vietnam Military Medical University, Hanoi Medical University, Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and Nam Dinh University of Nursing, among others. Their involvement brings valuable professional experience into the classroom and helps bridge the gap between theoretical instruction and practical training. As a result, students have greater opportunities to acquire specialised knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of the professional requirements of their chosen careers.

In addition to classroom learning, practical training and internships at healthcare facilities play an essential role in familiarising students with real-world professional environments. These experiences enable students to understand professional procedures, develop appropriate working attitudes and apply their acquired knowledge to practical situations relevant to their training programmes. They also provide an important foundation for students as they prepare to enter the workforce after graduation.

Diverse Training Programmes to Meet Learning Needs

At present, the College offers three-year full-time college programmes in several healthcare-related disciplines, including Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Imaging Technology, and Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation. In addition, it provides language programmes in English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Beyond college-level education, the College also offers two-year intermediate-level programmes and a second-degree conversion programme in Medical Assistant studies. At the elementary vocational level, its training areas include dental and maxillofacial techniques, dental prosthetics, elderly care, massage and acupressure, rehabilitation and traditional medicine, alongside other related programmes. The College also provides continuing professional education, including Continuing Medical Education (CME), to meet the need for ongoing professional development and updated medical knowledge.

Furthermore, Hanoi College of Medicine consistently seeks to expand cooperation with domestic and international healthcare institutions and specialised organisations, thereby strengthening the alignment between its training activities and practical professional requirements. Such partnerships help students gain exposure to professional working environments, understand industry expectations and better prepare for employment upon completion of their studies.

At the same time, opportunities for further study and employment in Japan and Germany offer students additional pathways for career development. Alongside professional expertise, foreign-language proficiency, professional conduct and the ability to adapt to new cultural environments are essential factors that deserve particular attention. Adequate preparation in these areas will enable students to approach international study and employment opportunities with greater confidence and readiness.

Fostering Medical Ethics and a Strong Sense of Community Responsibility

Hanoi College of Medicine upholds the core values of "Dedication – Professionalism – Creativity – Effectiveness". These values guide both teaching and learning, shaping the responsibilities of lecturers and the commitment of students to their personal and professional development. The College also places emphasis on political and ideological education, legal awareness, and compliance with institutional rules and regulations, contributing to the development of a disciplined and well-structured educational environment.

Looking ahead, the continued refinement of training programmes, investment in facilities, development of the teaching workforce and expansion of partnerships with specialised institutions will play an important role in the College's future development. These priorities require sustained attention to ensure that the institution can respond effectively to the increasingly demanding requirements of vocational education and the healthcare sector.

For an institution dedicated to training healthcare professionals, the true value of education lies not only in academic achievements but also in the professional competence, ethical standards and sense of responsibility that graduates demonstrate in their work. With its continued commitment to genuine learning, practical training and the cultivation of medical ethics, Hanoi College of Medicine remains focused on fulfilling its educational mission and contributing to the development of human resources for the care, protection and improvement of public health.
