VNHN - Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his Spouse Jenny Morrison arrived at Noi Bai International Airport on Thursday afternoon, beginning their three-day official visit to Viet Nam at the invitation of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

Morrison and his Spouse were welcomed by Minister-Chairman of the Government Office Mai Tien Dung and Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung among other officials at the airport.
His visit takes place at a time as the Viet Nam-Australia relations have robusty advanced, especially the political trust has become increasingly high thanks to regular exchanges of delegations and contacts.
Viet Nam and Australia are among the signatories of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and coordinating actively in fostering the finalization of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership involving 10 ASEAN member countries and six dialogue partners.
In 1974, Australia became ASEAN’s first dialogue partner and this reflected the broadening of Australia’s interests to economic issues such as development assistance, trade and investment, according to Australian Professor Carl Thayer.
Also in 1974, the two countries established diplomatic relations and over the years it became apparent that the two countries shared increasingly convergent views on regional and global political and security issues.
Bilateral relations have been continually raised since 1995 when Viet Nam became ASEAN’s seventh member, said Thayer.
He believes that Australia shares with Viet Nam the same interests in maintaining peace, security and stability in the East Sea.
The two countries also share global concerns such as sustainable development, addressing climate change issues, combating international terrorism and transnational threats, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, and UN peacekeeping. This has resulted in coordination in multilateral bodies.
Australia recognizes and supports Viet Nam’s constructive role in regional and international security particularly as Viet Nam becomes ASEAN Chair and a non-permanent member of the Security Council in 2020./
