Bat Trang looks to become member of Global Creative Craft Cities Network

The International Jury and World Craft Council on October 21 and 22 surveyed Bat Trang craft village in Gia Lam district, Hanoi, to consider recognizing it as a member of the Global Creative Craft Cities Network.

The Council includes: Mr. Aziz Murtazaev, Chairman of the World Craft Council for Asia – Pacific region; Dr. Sitthichai Smanchat, Vice Chairman of the Craft Council for Southeast Asia and Ms. Nadia Meer, Vice Chairwoman of the World Craft Council for Africa.

During the two working days, the delegation met with leaders of Bat Trang village and commune; visited the Bat Trang ancient village and ancient house; met with artisans and skilled workers of the pottery village. The delegation also visited the pottery street, the exhibition hall, the Bat Trang museum and met with small- and medium-sized businesses and international cooperation projects being implemented in Bat Trang.

Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Dinh Hoa told the delegation that in the context of Hanoi implementing the project on preservation and development of craft villages, Bat Trang has emerged as a symbol for promoting the strengths of the capital. With 1,350 craft villages and villages with crafts, Hanoi accounts for 56% of the total number of craft villages in the country, with 47 out of 52 traditional crafts. This is a solid foundation for building and developing cultural industries in the present era.

Through working and practical experience, the International Jury highly appreciated the unique values of Bat Trang craft village, from culture and history to economy and social impact. The council believes that Bat Trang not only meets all the criteria of a traditional craft village, but also deserves to become a member of the Global Creative Craft Cities Network.

At the meeting, expressing his surprise at the beauty and value of Bat Trang craft village, Aziz Murtazaev, Chairman of the World Craft Council in the Asia-Pacific region, said that he would introduce Bat Trang products and talented artisans to countries around the world, in order to spread traditional cultural values.

This move not only contributes to promoting the preservation and development of Bat Trang pottery, but also affirms the position of the craft village in the global craft picture.

In addition to Bat Trang craft village, on this occasion, the International Jury and the World Craft Council will also survey a number of other craft villages, such as Van Phuc (Ha Dong district), visit Chuong conical hat craft village (Phuong Trung commune, Thanh Oai district), Phu Vinh rattan and bamboo weaving village (Phu Nghia commune, Chuong My district), and Son Dong fine art sculpture village (Son Dong commune, Hoai Duc district)./.
