Artificial intelligence provides abundant opportunities, says DPM

Deputy PM Dam made the point on August 16 at the 2019 Viet Nam Artificial Intelligence Day (AI4VN Summit 2019) themed “Promoting the development of artificial ecosystems.”

The Summit drew the attendance of Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam, Minister of Science and Technology Chu Ngoc Anh, and Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung.

Minister Anh said that the Ministry of Science and Technology has already consulted technological development including AI.

Earlier, in the PM’s Directive 16/CT-TTg, dated May 4, 2017, the Government stressed that the 4th Industrial Revolution (or Industry 4.0) with a development trend based on the highly integrated nature of the digital-physical-biological connection system, with the breakthrough of the Internet of Things and the AI is fundamentally altering the world's production.

Minister Anh added that the Ministry ratified a key scientific program which supports AI research and development; associates researchers, investors, and enterprises to promote AI researches and applications.

He hoped that AI4VN Summit 2019 would connect, summon, and share AI applications in different areas and foster connectivity of artificial ecosystems.

Meanwhile, Minister Dung stressed that after 30 years of reform, Viet Nam became an integrated, dynamic, and attractive economy in the region.

Thanks to open business environment, a workforce which is good at math and interested in technology, an over 96 million population,and newly-signed FTAs, Viet Nam is enjoying abundant advantages for innovative start-up and technological development.

In the context of Industry 4.0, AI is flourishing. Last year, the industry expanded over 70%, equivalent to US$ 200 billion. AI is projected to drive breakthrough technologies in the next ten years. The Ministry of Planning and Investment has defined AI as a breakthrough and spearhead technology for further development.

The Government has already a national strategy on Industry 4.0 which gives a priority to AI development with a series of policies.

“It is historical time for taking action now or never,” said Minister Dung.

Deputy PM Dam highlighted the significance of AI4VN Summit 2019. “AI is not only a story of science but also a socio-economic issue for Viet Nam to grow,” he added.

Viet Nam is left behind and has no choice but to move more quickly and sustainably, the Deputy PM said.

According to Mr. Dam, IT, science, and AI are instruments which will bring great opportunities for Viet Nam.

He called upon the youth and enterprises to make full use of AI.

Deputy PM Dam expected that the summit would provide a foundation and impetus to the development of AI technology nationwide through strengthening connectivity among agencies such as research institutes, universities, businesses, technological groups, and the start-up community.

The AI4VN this year comprised a series of workshops on AI in tourism, health, education, and finance.  

Six reports from the world’s leading speakers in the field of AI, technology, and start-ups such as Dr. Ulli Waltinger of Siemens, Associate Professor Stefano Ermon from Stanford University in the United States and the co-founder of Angry Bird, Peter Vesterbacka were presented at the two-day event.

Earlier, on August 15, at the opening session, there was a roundtable discussion among the leading technological CEOs in Viet Nam including those from FPT and VinAI on the future development of the nation’s AI industry and solutions on how to spur growth in the sector./.
